Finding inspiration can be tough, especially when deciding what to write about. Today I was having trouble coming up with a topic. Then, I remembered a tip from Matthew Dicks’s book, Someday is Today: make terrible things.
The Wisdom of Terrible Attempts
Matthew Dicks says that creating great work involves many failed attempts. His advice, “don’t let perfect be the enemy of progress,” encourages us to focus on moving forward rather than aiming for perfection. This mindset frees us from the fear of making mistakes.
Progress Over Perfection
The main thing to remember is: producing anything is infinitely better than producing nothing. Be prepared to produce loads of terrible things in the name of progress. Dicks’s philosophy reminds us to expect and accept creating many terrible things on the path to success.
Inspired by Matthew Dicks, I recently committed to posting daily. I know many posts will be boring, poorly written, or just plain bad. And that’s okay. I’ll still make progress and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
Don’t let the fear of imperfection hold you back. Make those terrible things, and progress will follow. Just start creating, and see where it takes you.
