For years, I struggled to stick to a creative hobby. I dabbled in various activities—writing, drawing, painting—only to abandon each one shortly after starting. It wasn’t until about a year and a half ago that I stumbled upon crocheting, and my life has been different ever since.
The Struggle to Find My Niche
My creative journey has been filled with false starts. I wrote one article, which was rejected by the website I submitted it to. I tried my hand at drawing and painting, but never followed through. Despite my efforts, nothing seemed to stick. Meanwhile, I was constantly inspired by the creative passions of those around me:
- My younger brother: Managed an Instagram channel, posting pixel art daily for 1,000 days (@pixelatedaily).
- My youngest sister: Producing multiple short films.
- My oldest sister: Creating cartoons and visual effects for movies.
- My mother: A first-class interior designer.
- My mother-in-law: A prolific writer of fiction and newspaper responses.
- My father-in-law and my partner: Advanced electronics hobbyists.
- My sister-in-law: An impressive and determined painter.
Despite being surrounded by such creativity, I couldn’t seem to find my own path—until I discovered crocheting.
The Transformative Power of Creation
What struck me was how consistently creating something changed my perception of myself. There are a couple of things I learned from this process that I would like to share, hoping to inspire someone to do the same:
1. Inspiring Self-Confidence
What I learned after crocheting for a couple of months is that my confidence in my own abilities increased. With each completed project, especially the amigurumi-style creations that I fell for, I was reminded that I could start and finish something successfully. These small achievements boosted my confidence and provided a tangible reminder of my capabilities.
2. Creating Momentum
Crocheting also helped me build momentum. As I learned that I was able to finish what I started I carried over that knowledge to other fields as well. The satisfaction of finishing a project inspired me to tackle other areas of my life with the same determination. For example, I resumed running and have been consistent ever since.
Conclusion
Engaging in any form of creation can be a transformative experience. Whether it’s crocheting, painting, writing, or any other creative endeavor, the act of bringing something into existence can inspire self-confidence and build momentum in other areas of your life. If you’re struggling to find a creative outlet, I encourage you to keep exploring. You might just stumble upon something that changes your life, as crocheting did for me.
