Discover the Surprising Benefits of Tree Gazing: A Simple Practice for Better Health

A while ago I read Someday is Today by author Matthew Dicks. When arguing the significance of having a minute to spare, he elaborates on what different types of activities you can do in those precious seconds, rather than being bored, scrolling aimlessly through your phone, or zoning out. The activity that stood out to me was to stare into a tree for ten seconds (or twenty, I do not quite remember the exact amount of seconds).

The reason Dicks mentions this as an activity is that staring at trees has some health benefits associated with doing so. Staring into (or touching) a tree will:

  • Reduce stress levels.
  • Lower blood pressure.
  • Boost your immune system.
  • Increase your energy and improve your sleep.

One cool thing is that you do not even need to exercise or do anything active to tap into the benefits – though exercising will definitely bring about more benefits. It is sufficient to just sit and stare into a tree. Take a moment today to step outside, find a tree, and experience the simple yet profound benefits for yourself.
