Mastering New Habits: Overcome Discomfort and Achieve Success in 30 Days

Starting a new habit is hard. Whatever you have chosen to pursue may be difficult, uncomfortable, or boring at first. Maintaining a habit you’ve had for years is automatic. So why do we tend to think that the discomfort of the first week or two will persist, leading us to slowly perform the habit less well and then quit altogether?

There are a couple of things we need to be mindful of when going after a new habit.

Realize Two Things

  1. Initial Toughness is Temporary
    • The first couple of weeks will be tough and somewhat uncomfortable. However, if you persist, the habit will become fully automatic in the years to come.
  2. Consistency is Crucial
    • Simply showing up and doing a small version of your new habit works miracles. Be proud of yourself for overcoming the internal voice urging you to do easier, more fun activities. By getting into the habit – pun intended – of at least ‘showing up’ to your habit, you will be sure that the habit is not forgotten completely.

Steps To Form A New Habit

When you start a new habit, there are a couple of things to do:

  1. Determine a time and place for your habit. For instance, if you want to run more often, decide to run on Monday and Thursday at 8:00 AM. This way you know when to show up, making it clear when you have succeeded.
  2. Start from where you are. Before diving into a new habit, assess your current level. If you plan to run every Monday and Thursday but haven’t run since high school, start with a manageable distance like a mile. Walking is acceptable as long as you show up. Gradually increase the distance as you become more comfortable.
  3. Celebrate Your Wins. In a recent article I wrote, I emphasized the importance of celebrating your wins. Celebrating your achievements is crucial in habit formation. Recognize and reward your progress to maintain motivation.

Take Action

  • Write Down Your New Habit
    • Identify a habit you want to start.
  • Set a Time and Place
    • Determine a specific time and location for the habit.
  • Start at an Appropriate Level
    • Begin at a level suitable for your current abilities.
  • Plan Your First Milestone Celebration
    • Decide how you will celebrate your first achievement.

By consistently showing up and following these steps, you will find the habit becoming more effortless over time. Take the first step today, and you’ll be amazed at your progress a month from now 😊.
