Incorporating a new habit can be challenging, especially when trying to integrate it into an already busy schedule. However, my partner’s journey with daily running offers some insightful lessons on how to make a new habit stick and even thrive.
A Daily Habit
My partner picked up the habit of running almost a year ago. A couple of years ago he had already started running in the mornings a couple of times a week, but found that he struggled to keep up the habit. His solution was quite ingenious: run every day.
The issue with running a few times a week is the ambiguity. If you wake up feeling unmotivated, it’s easy to postpone. You might even convince yourself to make up for it later. By committing to daily runs, he eliminated this decision-making process. The rule was clear and unyielding, removing any need for deliberation.
Gaining Momentum
When he started, the goal was modest: run at least two kilometers a day. By the end of the first month, he was running three kilometers daily. Fast forward to today, and he’s consistently running eight kilometers every day.
His progress illustrates a powerful principle: committing to a daily habit accelerates growth. Here’s why:
- Eliminating Decision Fatigue: By removing the decision-making process, he conserved mental energy and reduced the chances of skipping a run.
- Consistency Builds Discipline: Daily repetition ingrains the habit into your routine, making it a non-negotiable part of your day.
- Small Steps Lead to Big Gains: Starting small and gradually increasing the distance allowed him to build stamina and confidence.
Of course, it’s important to acknowledge that not every habit can be pursued daily due to limited time. However, the key is to identify what is most important to you. Focus on that priority and commit to its growth.
Starting Your Daily Habit
If you’re inspired to adopt a new daily habit, here are some actionable tips:
- Start Small: Begin with a manageable goal to build a strong foundation.
- Be Consistent: Commit to doing it every day, regardless of how small the effort may seem initially.
- Eliminate Choices: Remove the decision process. Make it a non-negotiable part of your day.
- Track Your Progress: Keep a log of your daily achievements to visualize your progress and stay motivated.
- Adjust Gradually: As you gain momentum, consider gradually increasing the intensity or duration of your habit.
Embracing a daily habit can lead to remarkable transformations. My partner’s evolution from an occasional runner to someone who clocks eight kilometers daily exemplifies the profound impact of consistent commitment.

Disclaimer: I do not specifically encourage or discourage anyone from running every day. While daily exercise is beneficial for your health, incorporating variety is crucial. Repeating the same exercise daily can increase the risk of injuries, so proceed with caution! 🧡
