Yesterday, I had an enlightening conversation with a colleague at the car wash where I recently started working. He shared stories from his three years of experience, during which he encountered all kinds of people—some kind, others less so.
One story stood out. When he first joined the team, he found himself in a toxic environment. The team was unmotivated, rude, and often inappropriate in front of customers. They would blatantly use their phones while a line of cars waited, and even refused to work when they felt overwhelmed. This group had become so toxic that they would target new employees, picking on them until they broke.
What struck me was that, despite this hostile environment, my colleague chose to stay. Most people, including myself, would have likely quit within a month. But he didn’t. Instead, he took on the challenge and eventually became the team manager. He laid down a simple rule: step up or leave.
The team I joined two weeks ago is a testament to his efforts. They are kind, motivated, and easy to work with—completely transformed from the group he first encountered. None of the former employees still works there. This transformation was not just a shift in behavior but a story of growth and resilience.
Reflecting on this story, I find myself questioning my own approach to difficult situations. My instinct has always been to walk away from toxic environments in search of something better. However, this story challenges that perspective. It makes me wonder if, sometimes, the key to personal and professional growth lies in staying put and fostering positive change.
Yet, I also acknowledge that staying in a toxic situation isn’t always the right choice. There are times when prioritizing your well-being and seeking a healthier environment is the wisest decision.
This story leaves me with a dilemma: Should we stay and try to transform a negative environment, or is it better to move on to a healthier one from the start? Perhaps there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s okay.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on navigating these tricky situations! Have you ever chosen growth over comfort? Or found it better to move on? Let’s discuss how we can thrive in the face of adversity. 🖊️
