The 7 Most Common Limiting Beliefs – And How To Counter Them

You want to take a bold step, start a creative project, or pursue a personal dream, but something holds you back. There is an internal whisper in the background, convincing us we’re not good enough, smart enough, or capable of achieving something great. These beliefs can dominate our thoughts, and stop any project or dream from happening.

One of the limiting beliefs I’ve struggled with personally is the idea that I’m incapable of coming up with something creative or original. My personal opinion is that whenever someone creates something unique, it is creative and original by default, because the person pours in little bits of themselves into the creation. Yet, this opinion seemed only reserved for people other than myself.

In this article, we’ll explore two powerful tools—affirmations and visualization—that can help you overcome limiting beliefs. Then, we’ll look at seven common limiting beliefs that many of us hold, along with personalized affirmations and visualizations to counter each one.

How Affirmations and Visualization Help Overcome Limiting Beliefs

1. Affirmations

Affirmations are simple yet powerful statements that you repeat to yourself, designed to challenge and replace negative thoughts with empowering ones. These positive affirmations can help rewire your mind, eventually replacing the limiting beliefs that hold you back.

  • How it works: By repeating affirmations daily, you’re training your brain to focus on positivity, self-worth, and growth. Over time, these statements help to replace the negative, limiting beliefs that dominate your thoughts.
  • Why it helps: Affirmations are especially effective in countering negative thinking, as they allow you to build new thought patterns. This can help you feel more empowered and confident in your abilities.

2. Visualization

Visualization is the practice of mentally picturing yourself achieving your goals or overcoming obstacles. It helps you imagine success, boosting confidence and reducing fear by allowing your brain to “rehearse” success in advance.

  • How it works: You imagine yourself living without the limiting belief, achieving your goals, and embodying the best version of yourself. This visualization can include all the senses—sight, sound, and even feelings associated with success.
  • Why it helps: Visualization helps shift your mindset from “I can’t” to “I can” by creating mental imagery that makes success feel more attainable. It’s a way to “see” yourself thriving beyond your current limits, thus helping to overcome self-doubt.

The 7 Limiting Beliefs: What Stops You From Being Awesome

Now that we’ve covered affirmations and visualization, let’s discuss seven common limiting beliefs, with specific examples of how to apply these techniques to overcome each one.

1. “I’m not good enough.”

This belief undermines your confidence and convinces you that you’re not capable of success. Whether it’s starting a new project or pursuing a personal goal, the thought that you’re not enough can paralyze you from taking action.

  • Affirmation: “I am enough as I am, and I’m constantly growing into the best version of myself.”
  • Visualization: Picture yourself succeeding at something you once thought you couldn’t do. Imagine how it feels to accomplish that task and receive positive recognition for it. See yourself feeling proud and capable.

2. “I don’t have enough time.”

This belief leads us to put off important creative or personal projects, using time as an excuse to avoid discomfort or fear of failure. In reality, it’s about prioritization and learning to carve out time for what matters most.

  • Affirmation: “I create time for the things that bring me joy and fulfillment.”
  • Visualization: Visualize yourself easily fitting creative or personal activities into your schedule. Picture yourself managing your time well, feeling relaxed while executing your passion or project.

3. “I’m not smart enough.”

Comparing yourself to others or believing you lack intelligence can stop you from even trying. But don’t let this idea stop you! Becoming smarter about a topic is something you can influence. Allow yourself to grow into a person who is smart enough!

  • Affirmation: “I am capable of learning and growing, and I embrace challenges as opportunities.”
  • Visualization: See yourself tackling a difficult task, like solving a problem or learning a new skill. Picture yourself succeeding after some effort and feeling the satisfaction of having mastered something new.

4. “I’ll never succeed.”

This belief is rooted in the fear of failure and the assumption that success is out of reach. It often stops people from even trying because they think failure is inevitable.

  • Affirmation: “Success is within my reach, and every step I take brings me closer to my goals.”
  • Visualization: Imagine yourself achieving a goal you once thought impossible. Visualize the journey, including setbacks, but ultimately see yourself crossing the finish line, feeling accomplished and fulfilled.

5. “I’m not a creative person.”

Many people – including myself for a long time – believe that creativity is an innate talent they simply don’t have. This belief is either implicit or explicit. But creativity is a skill that can be developed through practice and openness to new ideas.

  • Affirmation: “Creativity flows through me, and I’m always generating new ideas.”
  • Visualization: Picture yourself engaging in a creative activity—whether it’s painting, writing, or problem-solving. Visualize yourself feeling inspired and full of ideas, enjoying the process and seeing your creative output improve over time.

6. “It’s too late to start.”

This belief convinces us that we’ve missed our chance to pursue something new. Whether it’s a creative endeavor, a career change, or a personal goal, the fear that “it’s too late” can be a major barrier to growth. And yes, I have often experienced this barrier, especially when I see people becoming successful at increasingly younger ages.

  • Affirmation: “It’s never too late to pursue my dreams, and I’m always evolving.”
  • Visualization: See yourself starting something new, regardless of your age or current circumstances. Imagine friends and family expressing pride in your endeavour.

7. “I’m afraid of being judged.”

The fear of judgment often stops us from sharing our true selves or expressing our ideas and creativity. But overcoming this fear can lead to deeper connections and more fulfilling experiences.

  • Affirmation: “I am confident in my abilities, and I embrace the value of my unique voice.”
  • Visualization: Imagine sharing your work, ideas, or opinions with others and receiving positive feedback. Visualize yourself feeling proud, confident, and validated as others appreciate your contribution.

Conclusion

As Henry Ford famously said, ‘Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.’ This quote is powerful because it both highlights the destructive power of limiting beliefs but also the immense creative force of positive self-belief.

Limiting beliefs have a sneaky way of holding us back, but they don’t have to define us. By identifying these beliefs and replacing them with affirmations and visualization techniques, you can shift your mindset, improve your self-confidence, and unlock your full potential. It may take time, but with consistent practice, you can overcome self-doubt and create space for personal growth, creativity, and success.
