When starting a creative project, it’s not uncommon to hit a creative block. These moments can feel frustrating, but taking the time to reflect and ask the right questions can help reignite your creativity. To get your creative energy flowing again, I’ve compiled a few questions that might prompt you to think in new ways and, hopefully, help you overcome your block.
- What would I do if I knew no one would judge my work?
Judgment—whether from others or ourselves—can be one of the biggest barriers to creative solutions. When you release the need to be perfect or to meet expectations, creativity tends to flow more freely. Ask yourself, “If no one were watching, what would I create?” This question frees you from the fear of failure and opens the door to experimentation and play. - When was the last time I felt blocked, and how did I overcome it?
Sometimes the solution is in looking back. Think about the last time you felt stuck and what ultimately helped you move forward. Did a change in scenery help, or did you try a different creative method? Reflecting on past experiences can offer you the reassurance that you’ve overcome creative blocks before—and you can do it again. - Who could I talk to or collaborate with for fresh ideas or feedback?
New perspectives can open up creative avenues you might not have considered. Who in your circle could help offer feedback or provide a new way of looking at your project? Sometimes, a conversation or collaboration with someone else is exactly what’s needed to get your ideas flowing again.
These questions are designed to prompt new thinking and help you get past any creative roadblocks. Give them a try, write down your thoughts and see where they take you.
